What is Search Engine Optimisation?

Essentially, Search Engine Optimisation is all about marketing your website in the natural results of the web’s major search engines. Google owns over 90% of the search engine market globally, and as you will see below, the search engine results page has both paid results (PPC) as well as the natural or ‘organic’ search results.

The position of any website in these organic results is entirely natural and non-paid for, and is based around a set of parameters that are part of Google’s search algorithm. This algorithm is something that is constantly being tweaked by Google and now includes over 200 different factors. Ultimately, it is an automated way of establishing which sites contain the results most relevant to a users search query, out of the billions of pages on the internet.

How can SCL help you with Search Engine Optimisation?

At SCL we have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the technicalities and nuances of how SEO works, and what any business needs to do to ensure they are maximising their potential online.

There are many online resources describing what SEO is and how to do it, as well as tutorials, training manuals, dedicated software and user forums. The quality of these varies massively, and many people end up wasting hundreds of hours trying to get to grips with it themselves, with often disappointing results.

At SCL we don’t make guarantees of your site hitting the number one slot on Google, but we do practice a 100% ethical approach to SEO, with well thought out campaigns that get results. We also commit to being continually up to date with current trends, techniques and changes the Search Engines roll out, to ensure that your results have longevity.

What we will do for you:

We will give you a full and honest appraisal of your business website. This includes a summary of how effective it currently is for SEO, how it fares for your target keywords, and how it shapes up against the competition. We will then give you a quote for your target keywords to be optimised, such that over time you fare much better in the search results. This will usually position your site high on the first page of the search engine results, depending on the level of competition for those keywords.

What does this mean? Well, a phrase such as ‘iPhone 4′ on Google currently returns 327,000,000 websites, so has very high competition – meaning to rank well for this phrase would take a lot of work, and also time. On the other hand a phrase such as ‘iPhone 4 is broken’ has just 19,100 competing websites, so competition is much lower.

What we won’t do for you:

We won’t guarantee you a number 1 slot on Google – whilst this may often be an achievable goal, beware of companies that offer to guarantee the top slots. The major search engines are constantly tweaking their algorithms such that results can and do change over time. Google for example rolled out a major update called Google Panda back in April, which impacted heavily on a lot of major websites rankings.
